ABERAVON AM David Rees has written to the Council to demand more details about the Afan Lido task and finish group.
The Assembly Member wants to know what the Council’s task and finish group will be asked to do, and when it will release its findings.
The move comes just weeks after the Council’s cabinet voted to defer making a decision on the future of the Afan Lido. They were expected to vote on an officers’ report at a special cabinet meeting on July 25, but instead formed a task and finish group to look into proposals for leisure facilities to replace the Lido, which was destroyed by fire in 2009.
David Rees released a joint statement with MP Hywel Francis, welcoming the decision to defer a vote on the replacement for the Afan Lido to allow a more detailed study of the needs of the town.
David Rees said: “It is important that this group now takes a fresh look at the replacement for the Afan Lido complex, paying particular attention to which site is the most adequate for the new complex, what facilities are needed to meet the needs of the people of Port Talbot, what funding is available to the project and how the project fits into the strategy for the Aberavon seafront.
“It is also important that this is done within a short timeframe to ensure that any further delay in its development is minimised.”
Dr Francis MP added: “The local councillors have once again listened to the people they represent and the establishment of a cross party task and finish group now allows a more detailed analysis to be undertaken.
“We want to see a new Lido complex as a focal point on the seafront as soon as possible and this way forward will ensure that this will be done quickly and in a transparent democratic manner.”
