Aberavon Green Stars RFC 9 v Ystalyfera RFC 11
PLAYING home at Little Warren on Saturday, Aberavon Green Stars came within a whisker of causing a big upset in Division 3 South West. At the bottom of the league table they were leading fourth placed Ystalyfera 9-8 with just seconds of the game remaining. Unfortunately for the home team the visitors’ wing Damian James took a chance with a long range drop kick and the ball just scraped over the cross bar.
Heavy conditions underfoot kept the try scoring to a minimum and the only try of the game was scored by Damian James after 15 minutes. On the half hour Marc Sheppard, guesting for the Green Stars on permit from Pontrhydyfen RFC, kicked a penalty for a 3-5 half time score.
Sheppard then put over two more penalties in the third quarter providing a 9-5 lead, which was reduced to 9-8 with a drop goal by Ystalyfera centre Dane Clancy. Then came that James match winning drop goal.
Nevertheless, this was the best performance this season by Aberavon Green Stars who are rebuilding, and provides some cheer for their dedicated coaching team of David McGrath, Darren flynn and Tony Cooksley. Next Saturday, October 20 they have another league game at Little Warren against Neath Athletic RFC.
Also playing at Little Warren on Saturday were the Aberavon Green Stars youth team who narrowly lost 13-16 to Kenfig Hill youth in the Ospreys Premier Youth division after leading 10-6 at half time. Green Stars flanker Karl Leyshon opened the scoring with their only try. This was converted by hooker Keirion Mattocks who also slotted over a penalty. The visitors’ outside half Lloyd Bradley responded with two penalties.
In the second half the Green Stars’ only score was another penalty by Mattocks. Kenfig Hill had a try from centre Kristian Stenner. Outside half Lloyd Bradley levelled the score with his conversion and then won the game with another late penalty.
