Green Stars

Aberavon Green Stars RFC   13   Ystradgynlais RFC   17

A rampant start by Ystradgynlais that saw the visitors run up a 17-point lead left many at the Little Warren despondent and shocked. The Division 2 West Central clash leaves the Stars in 8th and Ystradgynlais in 2nd position.

Full back Owen Jones kicked a penalty soon after the start that was quickly enhanced by a try by winger Stefan Jones and an Owen Jones conversion. Then the hammer blow of a classic long range interception try with outside half Sean Haynes dabbing down under the posts. Owen Jones was again at hand to convert.

Thus far Ystradgynlais had achieved a territorial advantage but Green Stars captain James Davies at hooker, rallied his troops and slowly they got back into the game. They were rewarded with a try on the half hour by number six Carl Leyshon and just before the interval outside half Sean Curran kicked a penalty, giving a more respectable score line of 8-17.

Aberavon Green Stars then dominated the second half and only determined tackling by Ystradgynlais kept them at bay. Several scoring opportunities went unfulfilled until the closing minutes when some neat approach work by winger Conor Condon and replacement scrum half Nathan Flynn set up a powerful charge by centre Eliot Jones to score under the posts. The conversion inexplicably failed but it was enough to gain yet another losing bonus point. Next week they continue their league campaign at Penlan.

Aberavon Green Stars Youth   52   Bryncethin Youth   0

Meanwhile it was better news for the Youth team, who emphatically dispatched Bryncethin 52-0. A total of eight tries were scored by three players with each scoring a brace.

Lock, Daniel Romaniw, got the first and full back Adam Jardine and winger Salman Khan were the other providers. Winger Nick Hughes and centre Jordan Condon also crossed the line with outside half Mathew Morgan converting six out of the eight tries.

Next Saturday they play away at Nantymoel
