Aberavon Green Stars continued a run of near misses by coming back strongly but fruitlessly at Neath Athletic.
They went down 27-21 at Neath Athletic in Swalec League Three South West.
The visitors trailed 24-0 at half-time but a powerful second period wasn’t quite good enough.
Athletic looked much the sharper team in the first half, running in four tries by wingers Luke Lewis and Luke Thomas, prop George Rees and outside half Adam Rowlands who also hit two comversions.
Replacement prop Kristian Griffiths led the Green Stars fightback with a try. Sustained forward pressure then brought a penalty try. Both were converted by Keirion Mattocks.
Veteran centre Andrew Harris crossed for the Green Stars’ third try, again converted by Mattocks. However, a Rowlands penalty made the game safe for Athletic.
This Saturday (April 6) Green Stars host Resolven at Little Warren following a testimonial game for Andrew Harris celebrating his 500th game for the club.
