RUGBY: Aberavon Green Stars 13 v Bryncoch 25

ALTHOUGH they led for most of the game, Aberavon Green Stars lost this Division 3 South West league game at Little Warren in the last quarter when Bryncoch ran in three tries.

The Stars’ captain and flanker Richard Evans scored their only try after ten minutes following a storming run by prop Carlo Caresuolo, who made a welcome return to the ranks of the Green Stars.

Hooker Keirion Mattocks made no mistake with a front of posts conversion. He followed up with a penalty on the half hour providing a 10-0 half time lead.

Bryncoch’s centre Craig Thomas kicked a penalty soon after the restart but Keirion Mattocks restored the ten point lead with a second penalty ten minutes later. The visitor’s other centre Andrew Spratt then crossed for their first try which Craig Thomas converted.

Good defensive work by Green Stars maintained their narrow lead until the last ten minutes when the Neath Valley visitors crossed for three unconverted tries.

The scorers were winger Ben Bromham, flanker Chris Martin with Craig Thomas nabbing their bonus point try seconds before the final whistle.

Next Saturday Aberavon Green Stars are away to Morriston.

Meanwhile, the youth team had another big win in the Ospreys Premier Youth division beating Pontardawe away 7-41. Number eight Chris Williams scored thre tries and captain Tom Barnard in the second row crossed twice. Flanker Carl Leyshon scored their final try. Centre Owen Howe was on form with the boot converting four of the tries plus one penalty.
