AFTER failing by the narrowest of margins against Ystalyfera the previous week, Aberavon Green Stars finally broke their duck in Division 3 South West at Little Warren. They beat mid-table Neath Athletic – and did so in style, with a try ratio of 4:1 plus a bonus point.
Number eight Keirion Mattocks scored the first of those four tries 10 minutes into the game, and only stout defending kept Neath Athletic at bay in the second quarter when Green Stars had two forwards sin-binned in separate incidents.
There was a flurry of activity soon after the restart when Green Stars centre Kristian Roberts doubled their 5-0 half-time lead with a well-taken try. This was followed by a penalty apiece from the visitors’ outside half Craig Gorman and Keirion Mattocks.
Stylish centre Josh Ingarfield cut through for try number three, with winger Tom Davies nabbing the Stars’ bonus point try half an hour into the second half.
Just before the final whistle the Stars’ three-quarters became a little cavalier on their five-metre line, allowing Neath’s Craig Gorman to scoop up a loose ball and score under the posts. He made no mistake with the only conversion of the game, an enouraging feature of which was that half the Green Stars’ team were under the age of 19.
Aberavon Green Stars have a bye in next Saturday’s Swalec Plate competition, so a 125th season game has been arranged at Little Warren between the Development XV and Taibach Seconds. It will be followed by a concert in the clubhouse by popular band Local Starngers, admission £3.
The next league game will be at Resolven on November 3.
