Fan Derek raises £221 for famine appeal

26 August 2011

A Port Talbot football fan has raised £221 for people suffering famine in east Africa – with a marathon six-hour non-stop busking session on Aberavon seafront on Saturday which set a new Welsh record.

Derek Davies, aged 51, also known as Derek The Fan, is famed for his songs about Swansea City, which are popular on Internet site YouTube.

The Baglan Community Church member defied the wind and rain to strum and sing from 10am in aid of the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal – with the support of madcap fund-raiser Captain Beany. As well as raising money from people passing by, he was being sponsored for the length of time he played.

And what was the most popular number on the day? “Gimme Shelter,” quipped Captain Beany, who added: “Well done to the generous British public.”
