Eager Wizards are raring to go . . .

31 August 2012

ABERAVON go into their opening Principality Premiership match of the season against Newport at the Talbot Athletic Ground tomorrow (Saturday) after completing four friendly matches.

Last weekend the Wizards defeated Tondu 52-19 at home and Baglan 28-0 away, and used 42 players in the four outings, including several triallists. Unfortunately, they lost scrum half Dan Davies with a broken ankle at Moseley.
Liam Gadd suffered a cut over the eye, and other injured players include centre Ben John and No 8 Nathan Strong, while flanker Nathan Brown and flanker Darryl Thomas have had eye and knee operations respectively. Centre Will Price is recovering from a knee reconstruction.
However, there is great competition for places. Veteran Richard Morris has played 511 times for the club, while among those pushing for a league debut are hooker Ieuan Davies, lock Hywel Davies and flanker Joe Tomalin-Reeves, who has returned from the Wales Under-18s development trip to South Africa.
Over the summer Aberavon have mounted a massive recruitment drive with flyers going out to 20,000 homes in Port Talbot and surrounding areas – and this has produced a welcome upsurge in new members.
The Wizards have also made rugby more accessible to the under-16s, with free entry to home games, and they are working with local junior clubs, for example by providing them with invitations to games. If a junior club would like to attend an Aberavon fixture, they can contact Gareth Howells at gareth.howells@aberavonwizards.co.uk
The club is really excited about tomorrow’s big kick-off,  and are hoping families and friends will go along and support the Wizards.
Aberavon starting XV: Jonathan Phillips; Ricky Thomas, Ben John, Liam Gadd, Richard Thomas; Jamie Davies, David Pritchard; Rowan Jenkins, Ieuan Davies, Andrew Clatworthy, Ian Moore, Sam Williams (capt), Chris Davies, Ben Thomas, Joe Tomalin-Reeves.
