Cwmavon RFC 13 – Aberavon Green Stars RFC 25

26 March 2014

Aberavon Green Stars logoThird placed Aberavon Green Stars came out top in this Division 4 South West local derby at Cwmavon’s Welfare ground. The bonus point for their four tries keeps them in contention for promotion, along with Cwmgors and Nantyfyllon.

The opening ten minutes of the game featured a kicking duel with Cwmavon’s outside half Aaron Lewis putting over two penalties, against one by Green Stars full back Kristian Roberts.

It took the visitors 30 minutes to register the first of those four tries following a powerful break by centre Kevin Thomas. This was converted by Kristian Roberts and followed within minutes by two eye-catching tries by winger Jordan Gammond, the first one entailing slick inter-passing with his outside half Ryan Crompton.

But Cwmavon remained very much in the game and got their only try just before the interval whistle when prop Rhys Hardy bulldozed his way over the line. Lewis’ conversion made the half time scoreline 13-20.

It was stalemate as far as scoring was concerned in the second half until Ryan Crompton made it safe with the bonus point try just five minutes from time.

This Saturday Aberavon Green Stars host Betws at Little Warren.
