HAVING already won the Ospreys Youth League B and the Afan Nedd District Youth cup competition, Aberavon Green Stars Youth faced Tonmawr Youth in confident mood for the President’s Cup at the Talbot Athletic ground.
At half time, however, they trailed 17-12, with Tonmawr’s Haydn Davies scoring the first try converted by Nicky Fisher.
Green Stars’ centre Dominic Carroll crossed the line soon afterwards, followed by full back Sean Curran. Both tries were converted.
Adam Dukes kicked a penalty for Tonmawr, who then increased their lead with an interception try converted by Nicky Fisher just before the break.
It was to be their final score of the game, with the young Green Stars pack dominating the second half leading to tries by flanker Carl Leyshon, centre Josh Ingarfield and captain Tom Barnard at lock. All three tries were converted by Keirion Mattocks.
This win was a fitting end to an outstanding season by the Aberavon Green Stars Youth squad, much to the credit of coaches Terry Cooksley, Mike Dyer and Paul Curran assisted by first aider Chris Griffiths, Rob Brown and Darren Barnard.
They were unbeaten in all their league and cup games, and next season will play in the Ospreys Youth League A – the 125th season for this famous club.
