CAPTAIN Beany’s numerous fans will be delighted by his latest fundraising idea – an A3 charity wall calendar featuring a portrait of the orange wonder.

The portrait has been painted by local artist Graham Clarke, who decided to add the captain to his collection of Port Talbot and Welsh celebrities – he has also painted Shirley Bassey, Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton.

Graham – who works from photographs to produce his paintings – presented the portrait to Captain Beany, and that’s when the caped crusader had his ‘beanwave’.

“I saw the portrait and I could see it had a lovely blank space at the bottom corner where a calendar would fit,” he told Port Talbot Magnet at his Sandfields-based bean museum last week. “I am supporting the local Gina Herman Ippy Appeal at the moment, and I thought this would be a great way to raise some money for her.”

Beany plans to launch the calendar at the Aberafan Shopping Centre on Saturday, where he will appear in person to sign them, for a £2 donation to the appeal.

With 1,000 calendars printed, he hopes to contribute around £2,000 to the appeal – which has so far raised £48,000 towards the £80,000 cost of Gina’s cancer treatment.

Captain Beany will be at the Aberafan Shopping Centre from 10am until 4.30pm on Saturday (September 29).
