Blanco’s and Dawnus win for Port Talbot

7 February 2013

The Gwyn Hall scooped three awards on the night

JUST two Port Talbot buildings were recognised for construction excellence in last week’s Building Control Awards.

The extension at Blanco’s Hotel and the Dawnus building at Tata Steel were given awards at the 11th annual Building Control Awards, a Council-run event sponsored by Lliw Building Supplies of Pontardawe. Neath Port Talbot’s Building Control section hosted the awards dinner.

The event, which took place in the Towers Hotel, saw many of the County Borough’s new buildings picked out for plaudits, including the Gwyn Hall in Neath, which scooped three of the 14 prizes on offer.

Other prizes went to Maesllarn Barn, a domestic conversion in Cilybebyll, which was awarded to Mike Price, and Ty Maes Marchog, Banwen, which went to the Leadbitter Group. Construction projects in Trebanos, Brynamman, Bryncoch and Neath were also recognised among the 14 winners.

Only two Port Talbot buildings were given gongs on the night – with CJ Construction Ltd winning the ‘Small Commercial up to £5 million’ category with their extension to Blanco’s Hotel. Tata Steel’s Dawnus Building won in the ‘best sustainable project’ category.

The winners will now go on to represent the County Borough in the South Wales regional awards in the spring.

Council Leader Ali Thomas presented the awards. He said: “These awards are testimony to what can be achieved when all involved in the construction process work in harmony to produce a top quality product.”

“It is a great achievement for everyone who attended to be nominated for these awards and demonstrates their commitment to produce quality buildings for the citizens of Neath Port Talbot, and especially to see one of our land mark buildings, The Gwyn Hall, winning so many awards.”
