Aberavon Green Stars RFC 22 – Vardre RFC 8

13 May 2014

Aberavon Green Stars logoAberavon Green Stars ended their Division 4 South West campaign on a high note at Little Warren with a bonus point win against sixth placed Vardre. This puts them back as league leaders since Cwmgors lost at Cwmavon but they do have a game in hand – home against Pyle next week. Whatever the result of that game Cwmgors and Aberavon Green Stars will be promoted and the Stars will play next season in the newly formed Division 2 West.

Vardre took advantage of a very strong wind in the opening stages of the game and were the first to score with a penalty by centre Richard Brunton. Green Stars adapted well to the windy conditions and slick close passing led to tries by centre Kevin Thomas, winger Josh ingarfield and hooker Kieron Mattocks. Full back Kristian Roberts managed just one conversion in the difficult kicking conditions giving the home team a 17-3 half time lead. Only their rock solid tackling kept Vardre from crossing their line.

Half way through the second half Green Stars got their bonus point try when their number eight Eliot Jones burst through and on the half hour Vardre achieved their first try via lock Jenkin Griffiths.

On Thursday, May 15 Aberavon Green Stars fly to Albufeira, Portugal for their annual tour – a fitting end to a successful season.
