It was another day of disappointment at Little Warren for Aberavon Green Stars as they narrowly lost to Maesteg Celtic. The opponents were joint leaders of Division 2 West Central with Cwmllynfell and Aberavon Harlequins and provided a closely contested encounter. The lead changed hands four times with the home team winning the try count 3:2 but losing the penalty count 4:1.
The Stars were in the lead for most of the first half after their strong running centre Josh Ingarfield crashed over the line ten minutes after kick off following some good approach work by his forwards. The visitors did not score until the final minute of the half when their centre Lee Arthur broke through and scored near the posts. Outside half Mathew Harris converted for a 5-7 interval lead.
Harris kicked the first of his four penalties just after the restart which was soon countered by Green Stars winger Jordan Gammond dabbing down. Replacement outside half Mathew Morgan from their youth squad added the points to regain the lead. Maesteg Celtic’s veteran scrum half Liam Healy spotted a wide gap in the Green Stars defense and crossed the line near the posts allowing Harris an easy conversion to retake the lead.
With ten minutes left to play Mathew Morgan levelled the sore 20-20 with a penalty but with play going from end to end Mathew Harris put over two more penalties just before the final whistle to claim victory 20-26. Aberavon Green Stars had to be content with a single bonus point and will have to pick themselves up for a local derby next Saturday when they visit newly promoted Cwmavon.
